McDADE, Ruth Y. (Miner)

McDADE - Ruth Y. (nee Miner) Age 85, a long-time Williamsville resident, died peacefully on January 26 in Bedford, MA. Born in Shelbyville, IL, Ruth grew up in the Beverly neighborhood of Chicago and graduated from that city's Morgan Park High School. After earning a bachelor's degree in elementary education from the National College of Education, Ruth was an elementary school teacher until her marriage to Vincent Dennis McDade in 1955. The couple raised three daughters, residing first in Clarendon Hills, IL, before moving to Williamsville in 1964. For 35 years, Ruth was a tireless volunteer, fundraiser, and community leader who devoted herself to many worthy causes in Western New York. Her efforts benefited her church, local schools, and a wide array of philanthropic organizations including the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Amherst Symphony Orchestra, and the Maria M. Love Convalescent Fund. Ruth's interest in American history led her to serve as a docent at the Wilcox House, site of Teddy Roosevelt's Inauguration. Ruth was an outspoken proponent and supporter of women's rights, racial equity, and international friendships. She tutored inner-city children in Chicago. In Williamsville she frequently invited foreign students from the University of Buffalo to share in the American tradition of Thanksgiving dinner at her home. Early in the AIDs epidemic, Ruth was a volunteer with the AIDS Network of Western New York, providing comfort at the bedsides of dying men. She was active in Remove Intoxicated Drivers (R.I.D.), serving as an advocate for drunk-driving victims and their families as they navigated the criminal justice system. Ruth became a national leader both in Compassionate Friends, an organization of parents who have lost a child, and in the Thomas Minor Society, composed of descendants of Thomas Minor, an early New England settler. Ruth loved water sports and spectator sports, and claimed in later years to be a fan of both the Bills and the Patriots. A very devoted parent and grandparent, she took an active and supportive interest in her children and grandchildren's lives. Ruth is predeceased by her mother Thirza Hawley Miner, father Lester Ward Miner, brother Charles L. Miner, and daughter Judith Ellen McDade. Survivors include brother Thomas H. Miner and his wife Lucyna (Chicago), daughter Grace McDade Babikian and husband A. Robert Babikian (Manchester by the Sea, MA), daughter Diane McDade and partner Barry Mitzman (Seattle), nephews William C. Miner, Robert Miner, William Miner, William McDade, Robert McDade, Philip McDade, nieces Nancy Miner Nilsen and Jean McDade, sisters-in-law Sally H. McDade and Jean B. Miner, former husband Vincent Dennis McDade (Greenwich, CT) and grandchildren Darcey Ann Babikian and Colin Robert Babikian. A memorial service will be held at Forest Lawn Chapel at a date to be announced in summer, 2016. In lieu of flowers, please direct memorial donations to Judith McDade Scholarship Fund, The Buffalo Seminary, 205 Bidwell Parkway, Buffalo, NY 14222, or Carleton-Willard Village Employee Appreciation Fund, c/o Barbara Doyle, 100 Old Billerica Road, Bedford, MA 01730.
