Telltale tattoo leads to arrest in Cheektowaga store holdup

Cheektowaga Police Detective Lt. Thomas Wentland saw something familiar on a surveillance video – a tattoo on the hand of a suspect – and knew exactly who he wanted to look for in connection with a Monday night holdup at the Gulf Express store at 1635 Kensington Ave. at Century Road.

A short time later, police reported Wednesday, Wentland and Detective James Genson located Justin D. Arnold, 27, at a local halfway house, and charged him with third-degree robbery. The detectives obtained a search warrant and reported finding stolen money and other evidence. Arnold is held in Erie County Holding Center in lieu of $10,000 bail.

Police said they were called to the store at 7:50 p.m. Monday and were told that a man had entered with his hand in his pocket, announced that he had a gun and demanded money from the clerk behind the counter. Police said the robber ran from the scene with about $100.
