As if the good people of Buffalo needed more reasons to eat doughnuts, Tuesday Feb. 9 is a day devoted to paczki.
The Polish frycakes, made of egg-rich dough filled with fruit jam or custard, were originally an excuse for observant Christians to use up eggs and lard before the pre-Easter lenten period. Now, everybody gets in on the act, because doughnuts are their own excuse.
Mazurek's, at 543 South Park Ave. in the Old First Ward, with another location in the Broadway Market, will help you get your fill. Black raspberry jelly with a rum glaze is its specialty.
Here's a few other places that can help you out.
Chrusciki Bakery, 999 Broadway (Broadway Market), 893-1464; 80 W. Drullard Ave., Lancaster, 681-9866; 2872 Delaware Ave., Kenmore, 381-9924
Paula's Donuts also offers paczki one day a year: today.
Elm Street Bakery, 72 Elm St., East Aurora, 652-4720, fills a brioche-style doughnut with red raspberry jam made from Awald Farm berries.
