Rabid raccoon confirmed in Niagara Falls

NIAGARA FALLS – A raccoon recently killed by two dogs on 74th Street in Niagara Falls was rabid, the Niagara County Health Department said Monday.

The raccoon, tested by a state laboratory, was the first confirmed rabid animal found in the county this year.

The department warned pet owners to make their dogs and cats are up to date on rabies vaccinations, which last for a year on the first occasion and up to three years on revaccinations.

The Health Department holds several free rabies vaccination clinics each year; this year’s first is set for June 6 at the Hyde Park Pavilion.
