Katherine A. Lorenzo, activist for several charitable groups

Katherine A. “Kay” Lorenzo, active in several charitable organizations, died Thursday in her Williamsville home after a long illness. She was 89.

A former president of Women Interested in Cystic Health and Girlstown/Boystown of Italy, Mrs. Lorenzo was a permanent board member of both agencies and chaired many of their fundraising events.

Both honored her as a Woman of the Year.

She also was a board member of Canisius College Scholarship Associates, serving two terms as vice president, and chaired many fundraisers. She was active in the Variety Club of Buffalo and chaired their fashion shows.

In the 1960s, she was president of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Erie County Bar Association. She was a 55-year parishioner of Christ the King Catholic Church in Snyder.

Born in Youngstown, Ohio, the former Katherine Vagnozzi came to Niagara Falls with her family as an infant and attended Niagara Falls schools.

She was a dance instructor prior to her marriage to attorney Harry E. Lorenzo in 1958. They had lived in Williamsville since 1962.

An avid golfer, she was a longtime member of the Brookfield Country Club, where she played for many years in the women’s 18-hole league and chaired many golf tournaments. She also enjoyed gardening and travel.

In addition to her husband, survivors include three daughters, Karyn Mercurio, Michele Staskiewicz and Jacqueline Donius; a brother, Lawrence Vagnozzi; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Christ the King Church, 30 Lamarck Drive at Main Street, Snyder.
