Where we live: Lackawanna

Lackawanna

The first batch of hydrant markers were finally installed in the First Ward, Anthony DeSantis told the City Council Monday night. A problem with the manufacturer stalled the installation of the 6-foot fiberglass markers on the city’s 500 hydrants. DeSantis, whose department is splitting the installation work with the Fire Department, expects hydrants in the remaining three wards will be outfitted with markers as soon as the shipment arrives. The markers help firefighters locate hydrants should they be snow-covered.

In other business, lawmakers approved DeSantis’ request to advertise for the rehabilitation of the Lehigh Soccer field. The soccer field called the cage because it is partially surrounded by a 12-foot aqua fence, is the home field of the Yemen Soccer Club. Work is expected to begin in spring. No activity will be allowed on the field for one year to allow the grass to mature.

This week:

• City planners will discuss the Comprehensive Plan from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Senior Center, 234 Martin Road.

• The 2nd Ward Block Club meeting was again rescheduled, this time for 6 p.m. Thursday at Queen of Angels parish hall, 144 Warsaw St. A presentation on fire prevention will be conducted by the Lackawanna Fire Department.
