Brad Angelo of Lockport needed to bowl a 257 game and gain 30 bonus pins with a win against Dom Barrett of England in his final position round match Friday in the 51st FireLake PBA Tournament of Champions. Angelo drew the 2-4-10 split after a strike in the 10th frame and Barrett won the match, 258-251 so neither bowler made it to Sunday’s television finals of the first major tournament of the 2016 calendar year (ESPN, 2 p.m.).
Angelo was 35 pins in back of fifth place qualifier Tom Daugherty (11,203). Barrett finished sixth with 11,158 pins and Angelo was seventh (11,168) to earn $5,500.
Retired U.S. Air Force veteran Mitch Beasley of Clarksville, Tenn., will make a bid for his first PBA major title Sunday as top qualifier. The 47-year-old right-hander won all 13 matches and tied another in his final 16 matches Friday to advance from third place to first, finishing with a 48-game total of 11,559 pins. He was 20-3-1 in match play.
The other finalists are Jesper Svensson of Sweden, two-time defending champion Jason Belmonte of Australia, EJ Tackett of Huntington, Ind.
