Coast Guard responds to false report of person in Niagara River

A panicky phone call from a motorist about a person in the Niagara River between the Peace Bridge and Ferry Street prompted a quick response by the Coast Guard and U.S. Border Patrol Wednesday afternoon.

Boats and two law enforcement helicopters rushed to the scene about 3:30 p.m. but it ended up being just a useful training session for the crews. Coast Guard officials confirmed about 4:30 p.m. that the “missing” person was actually two men checking ice conditions in that section of the river for the West Side Rowing Club.
