Letter: Selling cigarettes defeats ‘healthy and happy’ motto

Selling cigarettes defeats ‘healthy and happy’ motto

Healthy and happy? Hmm. By selling tobacco products, Walgreens promotes addiction and disease. It also makes money selling products to help people break the addiction and treat the dozens of diseases that tobacco causes. What a business model.

Ninety percent of smokers regret ever starting in the first place. The vast majority of people who quit are very happy that they’ve done so. Walgreens is choosing profits over health – not a very happy place. If Walgreens won’t stop selling cigarettes, the least it can do is put the packs out of sight and post graphic warnings at the checkout counter.
