Bryant & Stratton offers grants of up to $6,000 for medical assistant training

To meet the growing needs of local health care employers, Bryant & Stratton College looks to make education more affordable by offering grants of up to $6,000 to new students enrolled in its Medical Assisting associate degree program.

Students must enroll by Monday to qualify.

“This fast-growing career is creating an increase in the need for skilled workers,” Bryant & Stratton President and CEO Francis J. Felser said in a news release. “We hope these grants, combined with demand for graduates, will help propel students who want to get into this rewarding and exciting career.”

Medical assistants work in doctor and other health practitioners’ offices and are cross-trained to perform a mix of important clerical and medical duties.

Some of the clinical duties may include:

  • Taking medical histories and preparing patients for exams, assisting physicians during exams.
  • Collecting and preparing laboratory specimens as well as performing basic laboratory tests (for example, blood pressure measurement and vitals).
  • Explaining treatment procedures to patients and instructing patients about medication and special diets.
  • Preparing and administering medications as directed by a physician and authorizing prescription refills as directed.
  • Drawing blood, taking electrocardiograms, removing sutures and changing dressings

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of medical assistants is expected to grow by more than 150,000 jobs by 2022.

Students also will benefit from the school’s EmployableYOU classroom-to-workplace experience, officials said, as well as a strong curriculum and hands-on laboratory activities, and help writing resumes and preparing for interviews.
