NIAGARA FALLS – An Elmwood Avenue woman got an offer too good to be true Thursday – shares of Internet giant Facebook at substantially reduced prices.
Police said the woman assumed the offer came from a trusted friend and followed through on a request to wire $700 to an address in Kentucky to complete the purchase. She followed through on another request for $800 more, police said, but became suspcicious after wiring an additional $600 Saturday.
Police said the friend’s Facebook account had been hacked and the offer was a scam.
The victim, who was fleeced of $2,100, was advised to hang onto records of the transactions. An investigation is underway.
