Sylvia P. Harenda of Hamburg, active in her church and in the Grange, died Tuesday at Buffalo Mercy Hospital after a short illness. She was 84.
Born in Buffalo and a graduate of Hutchinson Central High School, she was a clerk for the trucking company Dixie Ohio Express in Buffalo from 1960 to 1987. Later, she served as secretary of religious education for St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Athol Springs from 2000 to 2014.
Miss Harenda was given the St. Joseph the Worker Award in 2000 for her activities with St. Francis of Assisi Church. She was a catechist for 25 years, a bingo kitchen manager for 20 years and a Eucharistic minister for 15 years. She also was a member of the Third Order of Secular Franciscans.
A longtime member of Hamburg Grange 1293, she served as its secretary for 20 years and treasurer for 10 years. She also was treasurer of the Erie County Pomona Grange for 20 years. She was presented with the New York State Grange Gerald M. Eastman Award in 2006.
She also was a member of the Armor Fire Department and Melodiers Drum Corps, and the Women’s Transportation Club.
Survivors include a sister, Dolores Holt.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 4263 St. Francis Drive, Athol Springs.
