A Buffalo man who is a cornea and tissue transplant recipient will be one of the riders on the Donate Life float Friday in the annual Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif.
Miguel Santos, 54, who will represent UNYTS (Upstate New York Transplant Services), was able to witness the birth of his son in 1993 after he received a cornea transplant to restore eyesight that he lost due to a degenerative disorder. He received a tissue transplant in 2013 to reverse the effects of diabetes on his gums.
Santos, who became a volunteer and motivational speaker for UNYTS after his first transplant, was elected to the organization’s board in 2015. He also recently was ordained as a Catholic deacon.
