The Buffalo Bills rushed for 236 rushing yards on 40 attempts with two touchdowns in a 16-6 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, a few days after former Bills G.M. Bill Polian called them "aging" and "unathletic."
Afterward, players said they read those comments, disagreed with them and used it as motivation. Buffalo currently ranks No. 1 in the NFL in rushing.
On Monday, Ryan said he did scratch his head when he saw Polian's comments.
"I did a little bit," Ryan said. "But people have the right to their opinions, there's no question about it. Obviously you get a lot of opinions about a lot of different things out there. But I like the way our offensive line has played. Obviously, statistically we're No. 1 in the league in rushing. And not just in rushing but in rushing average per attempt. That's a good sign that your offensive line is doing something. The benefit I have is that we see our guys every day. Whether Bill Polian saw him this game, that game or whenever, maybe they never played well. I'm not sure. But obviously he's in the Hall of Fame for a reason. The guy's a great evaluator and things like that. But I think if he had the benefit of being around this group as I have, I think he'd see that this group is pretty darn athletic and pretty good."
The starters’ average age is 26.4 years old, guard Richie Incognito --- one of the best in the best in the NFL this season per Pro Football Focus --- has been pulling regularly and on the season Buffalo has rushed for 2,319 yards, the eighth-most in team history and most since 1992.
So Ryan was quick to defense the entire group. It remains to be seen if Polian does serve a consulting role this off-season as he hopes to.
"I think we have an outstanding center," Ryan said. "I think we've got, in my opinion, one of the best guards in the league in Richie Incognito. An outstanding young right guard, an excellent right tackle. And our right tackle, we've had three different guys play that position but all three have been OK, in my opinion."
