34 cats die in Niagara County shed fire

PORTER – Investigators are trying to determine what triggered a fire Saturday morning that destroyed the backyard shed of a home at 2253 Braley Road, killing 34 pet cats.

A resident of the house called 911 just before 9:30 a.m. after discovering the fire and unable to get inside the burning, 12-by-20-foot wooden shed. Crews from the Ransomville Volunteer Fire Company extinguished the blaze, but not before the shed was heavily damaged and all the animals had perished, according to reports.

The cats were housed in the shed, deputies said. Niagara County SPCA officials said they were aware of no problems or complaints at the address. The Niagara County Fire Origin unit is investigating. A damage estimate was unavailable.
