Preventing baldness

Ed Scanlan, a longtime reporter and columnist for The News, liked to tell about one bizarre period in the history of the newsroom. A reporter, John Draper, was on the staff when Scanlan arrived.

Scanlan wrote, “It was Jack Draper who introduced in The News office crude oil as a preventative of baldness with the result that the office frequently smelled like an outpost of the Standard Oil Company.”
