People should use caution when aligning with groups

Thursday’s rally in Niagara Square on refugee settlement involved groups whose agendas make some people uncomfortable.

For example, the day of the rally, one co-sponsor, the Western New York Peace Center, had an Another Voice published blaming the U.S. government for promoting state terrorism and violence. It listed a myriad of issues having nothing to do with resettlement. By bringing up issues appealing to those who feel disenfranchised, the column hijacked the rally as a recruiting tool for Peace Center membership.

The Peace Center, as well as a few other co-sponsors of the rally, have promoted dozens of programs that many in the community feel veer into anti-Semitism. We need to be careful who we align ourselves with so our own values aren’t compromised, not only for ourselves, but for the many good people who came in good faith.
