Chautauqua Amphitheater’s future to be discussed

CHAUTAUQUA – The future of the embattled Chautauqua Amphitheater will be discussed Dec. 30, when the Chautauqua Institution board reassembles to consider construction bids for the demolition of the 1892 outdoor theater and the building of a modern replica in its place.

The controversial decision has created a rift at Chautauqua, and drawn severe criticism from national and regional preservation and theater organizations, and architectural critics.

The board found the bids higher than expected when it convened in October, causing the reconsideration of bids at this month’s meeting. There has been no indication that the board’s late-August decision to proceed with demolition and a new amphitheater will be reconsidered.
