Where we live: Lackawanna

Voting is set for Tuesday on a proposed $27.3 million capital improvement project for Lackawanna Public Schools. State building aid will fund 98 percent of the improvements with EXCEL funding expected to provide the remainder.

EXCEL (Expanding our Children’s Education and Learning) covers projects in five categories: education technology, health and safety, accessibility (Americans with Disabilities Act compliance),

physical capacity expansion and school construction or energy conservation.

EXCEL offsets the required local funding and minimizes or eliminates the tax burden.

Suggested improvements totaling $23.8 million at the Lackawanna Middle and High Schools include: installing security vestibules, renovating science, home economics and art rooms; upgrading guidance offices and the addition of a corridor.

The $3.4 million in renovations at Truman Elementary include: roof replacement, masonry restoration and the installation of a new sump pump.

Voting will take place from noon to 9 p.m. at the Lackawanna Senior Center, 130 Martin Road.
