Calling quilt-lovers

The Buffalo History Museum has opened its new exhibit, “Quilts: Techniques and Styles.” The exhibit of more than 40 quilts runs through January 2017, with the quilt displays changing quarterly.

Some highlights from the exhibit:

• Visitors can explore the symbolism and meaning of the quilts via an interactive touchscreen display.

• A Buffalo-made Victorian bedroom suite – with the must-see authentic replica of Victorian wallpaper – 19th century sewing tools and other rarely seen pieces from the collection will also be showcased.

• In January and February, live quilting bees are being scheduled on select Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Local quilting guilds will design quilt blocks that reflect the community in which they live. The blocks will be assembled and eventually the quilt will become part of the museum’s permanent collection.

There’s still time

Take a break from the holiday hoopla to visit the Buffalo & Erie County Botanicals Gardens seasonal show – “Poinsettias – Expect the Unexpected!”

But hurry. It ends Jan. 3.

Visit buffalogardens.com for details. Or call 827-1584.

Handle it

Structured satchels with top handles make a style statement this season. MICHAEL Michael Kors, Lauren Ralph Lauren and Kate Spade New York are just a few of the brands that offer them.

While small satchels smack of the 1950s, you’ll find them in medium and large sizes as well to accommodate all your essentials.

And finally ...

“Waking up without a purpose and going to sleep without achieving anything – like what other people call vacation or time off – makes me depressed.”

– Jennifer Lawrence, 25-year-old actress, in Entertainment Weekly, reprinted in People magazine’s list of 25 Most Intriguing People of 2015.
