Lockport man pleads guilty in sheet metal theft

LOCKPORT – A man who stole 40 sheets of stainless steel from Custom Laser in Lockport last year pleaded guilty Friday in State Supreme Court.

Stephen J. Zimmerman, 25, of East High Street, admitted to fourth-degree grand larceny. He is to be sentenced Feb. 18 by Justice Richard C. Kloch Sr., who could send him to prison for as long as four years.

Zimmerman allegedly removed the 40 sheets of 39-by-80-inch steel from the business Dec. 4, 2014. State Police said at the time that they were tipped off by a Niagara Falls scrap metal dealer. Troopers determined that Zimmerman hired two other men to help him unload the steel. He will owe $129.98 in restitution to Custom Laser, because one of the sheets was damaged; all the others were returned.
