Niagara Falls man avoids jail in radiator theft

LOCKPORT – A Niagara Falls man who stole a cast-iron radiator from a vacant Niagara Falls home was sentenced Thursday to three years’ probation and 15 days in the Niagara County work program.

Nelson M. Merced, 24, of Hyde Park Boulevard, had pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of petit larceny in connection with the Jan. 22 theft on Fourth Street in Niagara Falls.

County Judge Matthew J. Murphy III also imposed a three-year probation term on Merced’s co-defendant, an Ashland Avenue 17-year-old, who pleaded guilty to the same charge. Both men paid $150 in restitution to the owner of the unoccupied house.
