Joseph Whalen, revered Lockport artist, dies at 87

Joseph Whalen, the Lockport artist and high school art teacher known for his paintings and illustrations of neighborhood characters and haunts, died Dec. 17 at Niagara Hospice House, according to the East Niagara Post.

A 75-year retrospective of Whalen's work, which has long been a fixture in his hometown of Lockport, was recently on view in Market Street Art Center.

According to the East Niagara Post, Whalen is survived by his wife Cathleen Connors Whalen, along with seven children, 27 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours will be held Dec. 19th from 5-8 pm and Dec. 20th from 1-5 pm in the Prudden & Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee St., Lockport. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist RC Church, 168 Chestnut St., Lockport at 10 a.m. Dec. 21st.
