12 Days of Buffalo Christmas: Fourth Day

Here are my suggestions for a uniquely Buffalo Twelve Days of Christmas, one delicious gift a day until Christmas Eve. Traditionally the 12 days of gift-giving follow Christmas, but this way you’ll have plenty of time to prepare.

If you're late to our series, see the first day, second day and third day.

On the fourth day of Christmas my true love gave to me...

•    Four Tom & Jerrys from Buffalo Proper

Enjoying a warm Tom & Jerry is a Western New York winter tradition at saloons like Schwabl’s and The Place (whose reopening has been pushed to January after an ownership change), which offer a cocktail reminiscent of a sweet eggnog.

Buffalo Proper has improved the sweet standard with a classic preparation honoring Jerry Thomas, the barkeep and bon vivant who made the drink popular in the late 1800s. The Proper cocktail ($10) is a hot, creamy egg batter, with a touch of star anise, cayenne and a healthy grating of nutmeg.

It’s enriched with Maison Rouge VSOP Cognac and Jamaican Appleton rum with its characteristic cane sugar “hogo” or funk. Proper's slightly sweet cocktail is a rich and balanced homage to the classic.
