Man avoids jail in thefts from Lockport credit union

LOCKPORT – A Monroe County man who stole $22,842 from Cornerstone Community Federal Credit Union in Lockport was placed on five years’ probation Tuesday and ordered by State Supreme Court Justice Richard C. Kloch Sr. to repay the money.

Patrick J. Tomai, 34, of Pittsford, could have gone to prison for as long as four years on his plea to fourth-degree grand larceny.

In what prosecutors called a check-kiting scheme, Tomai wrote checks on an M&T Bank account with insufficient funds to pay off a credit card Tomai had obtained through Cornerstone. Before Cornerstone discovered the checks were worthless, Tomai took cash advances from his Cornerstone account. The crimes occurred in June and July 2014.
