It will take a major accomplishment for the Canisius women’s basketball team to extend its current winning streak to six games.
The Golden Griffins will face the highest-ranked opponent they has ever met in women’s basketball Wednesday night when they take on the No. 5 ranked University of Texans Longhorns in the Frank Erwin Center in Austin at 8 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on the Longhorn Network.
Canisius is 6-2 after Monday night’s 57-55 victory over Lamar in Beaumont, Texas. Jasmine Mungo scored 19 points and had eight rebounds off the bench to lead the Griffs’ victory. Coach Terry Zeh’s team spent Tuesday sampling some Tex-Mex cooking that Austin is famous for as they looked ahead to Wednesday’s game.
Texas is 8-0 after Sunday’s 77-69 victory over 14th-ranked Stanford, coached by Western New York native Tara Vandaveer.
Senior guard Empress Davenport of the Longhorns was named United States Basketball Writers Association Anne Meyers Drysdale National Player of the week for her 23-point performance in the game. She entered the game averaging 5.9 points per game with a previous career-best of 15 points.
After Texas, the Canisius women will have another nonconference road game, against Northeastern in Boston on Monday afternoon.
