Black Rock murals get grant for repairs

Help is on the way for the murals in the Buffalo Religious Arts Center, formerly St. Francix Xavier Church at 157 East St. near Amherst Street in Buffalo’s Black Rock neighborhood.

The Western New York Regional Economic Development Council has awarded the center $202,237, primarily to repair cracked brick masonry that was allowing water to seep inside and threaten murals painted between 1920 and 1924 by a Baravian-born artist.

“The murals have been a constant concern to me,” says Mary Holland, the center’s director. “Every year the cracks have widened, causing further damage to the interior of the building.”
