Here’s my suggestions for a uniquely Buffalo Twelve Days of Christmas, one delicious gift a day until Christmas Eve. Traditionally the 12 days of gift-giving follow Christmas, but this way you’ll have plenty of time to prepare.
On the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me...
• Two Schwabl's hot ham sandwiches
Many of our holiday traditions started in the Victorian Age, with Dickens, roast goose, mistletoe and 'nog aplenty. Take your lover back in time at Schwabl's in the Hamlet of Ebenezer, whose dishes honor a time long past.
While the beef on weck has won national acclaim, my winter go-to is the hot ham sandwich ($11.19, $14.89 plate). It’s a half-pound of hand-sliced ham on white bread, the entire sandwich draped in clove-spiced tomato gravy.
Pair this sandwich with a Tom & Jerry cocktail, pickled beets and bacon-spiked German potato salad, and you have a wonderful winter meal fit for Ebenezer Scrooge, who certainly wouldn't share with you.
