Where we live: Town of Tonawanda

Town of Tonawanda

A Kenmore civic group is calling for candy canes.

The Kenmore Village Improvement Society each year makes 200 fragrant swags of fresh greenery as gifts for the seniors living at the Kenmore Housing Authority at Colvin Boulevard and Kenmore Ave.

Volunteers tie the greens with a red ribbon and add a candy cane. Donations of boxes of red-striped candy canes may be dropped off on the enclosed porch at 16 Warren Ave.

Members will make the swags Monday during the group’s monthly meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. in Kenmore Community Center, Wilber and Mang avenues.

This week:

• The Church of the Nativity, 1530 Colvin Blvd. near Sheridan Drive, Town of Tonawanda, will stage a Living Nativity at 5 and 6 p.m. Sunday on its lawn. All are welcome. Carols will be sung and hot chocolate and cookies follow each performance.

• Donations of new, unwrapped Christmas toys will be accepted through Monday at collection barrels placed at 19 drop-off locations around the town and village including the municipal building, police stations and golf dome. Visit tonawanda.ny.us for a full list of drop-off sites.

• The town Zoning Board of Appeals meets at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at the Municipal Building, 2919 Delaware Ave.

• Applications are due Jan. 1 for the Kenmore Police Department’s Citizen’s Police Academy, which meets for 11 weekly classes beginning in January. Contact Lt. Dave Lewandowski at 875-1234 or cpa@kenmorepolice.org for more info.
