HOWLAND, Jean Smith
HOWLAND - Jean Smith A former teacher at The Park School in Buffalo, administrator for Young Audiences and the Episcopal Diocese, reading specialist at Rush-Henrietta, and volunteer in the Rochester City School District, died November 21, 2015, at the age of 89. She was predeceased by her loving husband John and brothers Merle and Clay Smith; and leaves behind her children Steve Parmelee (Stephanie), Margie Trone (Mark), David (Norah) and Kate Behler, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Jean studied at Buffalo Seminary, Wells College, University of Buffalo and Nazareth College receiving her Masters at the age of 55. She dearly loved her grandchildren and relished every encounter and story about them, travel, and the arts, especially dance. She was involved in The League of Women Voters, Linkages of Rochester, Sister City - Novgorod, Literacy Volunteers, and English as a Second Language. Jean lived in Geneva, Switzerland and witnessed Eleanor Roosevelt draft the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Throughout her life she was active in civil and human rights projects.
