Richard G. Van Over, retired National Fuel worker

Richard G. Van Over, a retired National Fuel worker, died Monday in his Orchard Park home after a short illness. He was 82.

Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of Orchard Park High School and earned an associate’s degree in business management and administration from Bryant & Stratton Business Institute.

He served in the Navy from 1955 to 1958 as a photographer first class aboard the aircraft carrier USS Wasp, stationed in Japan and Boston, Mass. He continued service in the Naval Reserve for 38 years and served as chairman for five years of the USS Wasp reunion organization.

Mr. Van Over began working for the gas company in 1959 as a meter reader, then became a service worker and created a new job as an energy conservation consultant. He retired in 1996.

Active in St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church, he also was secretary of the Southtowns Multiple Sclerosis Group and treasurer of the Orchard Park Historical Society.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, the former Beverly De Botte; a daughter, Lynn Van Over-Riter; two sons, Scott and Richard C.; and two granddaughters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Bernadette’s Church, 5930 S. Abbott Road, Orchard Park.
