Mayville charged with running pot-growing operation that sparked fire

MAYVILLE – A 41-year-old Mayville man has been charged in connection with the marijuana-growing operation that sparked a fire in October.

Michael J. Monroe, of Morris Street, has been charged with unlawfully growing cannabis and second-degree criminal possession of marijuana, a felony, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.

Fire investigators determined that the fire on Oct. 29 at 57 Morris St. in the village started as a result of electrical issues associated with the lighting set up for the illegal growing operation, the sheriff’s office said.

Monroe is scheduled to appear in Town of Chautauqua Court on Monday.
