Police have charged a Lancaster man with drunken driving and vehicular manslaughter in connection to a fatal crash in Elma Wednesday night.
A 60-year-old man died at the scene of a three-vehicle crash at Girdle and Bullis roads that happened at about 10:10 p.m.
John Zakrzewski, 31, of Redlein Drive, was charged with driving while intoxicated and second-degree vehicular manslaughter.
Early indications are that the suspect’s vehicle hit one vehicle from behind and then another head-on, said Erie County Sheriff’s Chief Scott Joslyn.
Authorities have not released the name of the victim, who was alone in his vehicle, as they work to notify next of kin.
Two people in a third vehicle were treated and released at the scene.
Zakrzewski, who was also treated at the scene, is being held at the Erie County Holding Center and will be arraigned at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Elma Town Court, the sheriff’s office said.
A portion of Girdle – between Woodard and Chairfactory roads – remained closed early Thursday morning. A portion of Bullis between Pearl Terrace and Stolle Road is also closed. The sheriff’s office said the roads are expected to remain closed at least until the early afternoon.
The crash remains under investigation.
The sheriff’s office initially said Zakrzewski was 54.
