Sister Therese Marie Sullivan

March 18, 1928 – Dec. 7, 2015

Sister Therese Marie Sullivan, 87, a sister of St. Mary of Namur and a teacher in Catholic elementary schools, died Monday in the St. Mary Center.

Born Eileen Sullivan in Lowell, Mass., she received a bachelor’s degree in education from Mount St. Joseph College in Cincinnati. She taught grades one to five in St. Paul’s School, St. John’s School and Mount St. Mary’s School in Kenmore, and at an elementary school in Lowell.

Having suffered from polio as a child, she was unable to move easily and devoted her efforts to less physically demanding assignments in later life, such as teaching guitar and piano, doing craft work with patients in hospitals and serving as a eucharistic minister for the homebound. After she was unable to drive, she began a phone ministry, inviting people to call and pray with her.

Survivors include two brothers, Harold and Raymond.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 7 p.m. Thursday in the chapel at St. Mary Center, 241 Lafayette Ave.
