Three-car crash on Sheridan sends two to hospital

A chain-reaction crash on Sheridan Drive near Sweet Home Road in Amherst midday Tuesday sent two people to the hospital, Amherst police said.

Captain Patrick McKenna of the Amherst Police Accident Investigation Unit said Karl Schmitt, 71, of Amherst was northbound on Sweet Home in a 2004 Lincoln when it was struck broadside by a 2002 Oldsmobile, which was headed east on Sheridan. Gina A. Destro, 50, of West Seneca was driving the Oldsmobile, police said.

The Lincoln was pushed into a 2012 Infiniti that was stopped in the west lane of Sheridan and was driven by Steven M. Stern, 54, of Williamsville, according to McKenna.

Witnesses told police the Oldsmobile ran a red light.

Karl Schmitt and his passenger, Ronald Schmitt, were both transported to Erie County Medical Center. Karl Schmitt was listed in fair condition with broken ribs, police said. Ronald Schmitt was expected to be treated and released. There were no other injuries reported.

The investigation was continuing.
