Margie Suchman, a retired University at Buffalo secretary who was active in a wide range of volunteer activities, died Sunday at Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga, following a lengthy illness. The Amherst resident was 84.
She had been a busy volunteer since retiring in 1995, after a 30-year career in which she worked in several different offices at UB, including the affirmative action office.
Born and raised in Buffalo’s Humboldt Park area, the former Margie Herring was a graduate of Bennett High School and Bryant & Stratton business school. She enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, mall walking and spending time with her five grandchildren.
She and her husband, Seymour, recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
After retiring from UB, Mrs. Suchman spent many hours volunteering with the local chapter of the Hadassah Jewish charity organization, where she was a former president. She also volunteered at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Shea’s Performing Arts Center and the former Studio Arena Theater. She was also a longtime bingo volunteer at the old Temple Sinai in Amherst.
She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Holland and Sandra Roorand.
A memorial service for will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Amherst Memorial Chapel, 281 Dodge Road, Amherst.
