Juanita Inez Lancaster of Buffalo, homemaker, churchwoman and foster parent known affectionately as “Mother Lancaster,” died Dec. 1in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital. She was 90.
Born in Uniontown, Ala., the former Juanita Sheppard moved to Buffalo in 1946 and married James Lancaster. They raised two children.
After briefly working outside of the home as a domestic for a former Buffalo City Court judge, Mrs. Lancaster became a foster parent. For more than 35 years, she opened her home to a number of foster children, as well as the children from the neighborhood that she baby-sat.
She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church for 70 years, and was an active participant in many of the church’s ministries, including the adult choir, Benevolence Society, Missionary Society, Senior Ministry and the Busy Bee Society. She was the last surviving member of the church’s Consecrated Mothers of Calvary Baptist Church, who were honored in 1995.
She enjoyed canning and baking and shared her jellies and baked goods with others.
Her husband died in 1968. Survivors include a daughter, Tanito; and a brother, Walter Sheppard.
Funeral services were held Monday at Calvary Baptist Church.
