BATAVIA – A nine-week National Safe Tractor and Machinery Operation course is being offered by the Genesee County 4-H Youth Development Program to 14- and 15-year olds wishing to gain employment as certified farm equipment operators.

The course will run from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, beginning on Jan. 16 at Cornell Cooperative Extension, 420 East Main St. From there, sessions will take place at businesses that sell farm machinery.

The course is open to current 4-H members at a fee of $25. Those who are not members can join by paying an additional $25 per youth or $50 per family.

The program concludes with a 50-question test requiring a score of at least 70 percent. Students who pass the knowledge test will be permitted to take the skills and driving tests.

After passing both the written test and driving tests, the students will receive their formal certification from U.S. Department of Labor.
