Lockport man indicted for allegedly causing cop to break thumb

LOCKPORT – A Lockport man who allegedly caused an injury to a city police officer Oct. 3 pleaded not guilty to a four-count indictment Monday in Niagara County Court.

Cedric R. Carpenter, 21, of Washburn Street, is charged with second-degree assault, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, second-degree menacing and obstructing governmental administration.

Officer Aaron K. Belling said he suffered a fractured right thumb and partially torn ligament when he fell to the ground while trying to subdue Carpenter. He was among the officers sent to Washburn Street to break up a fight, during which Carpenter allegedly threatened another man with a knife.

Belling’s brother, Lt. Marshall K. Belling, subdued Carpenter by pressing a Taser against Carpenter’s body and pressing the “dry stun” button.
