NIAGARA FALLS – A Niagara Falls woman is the victim of telephone scammers claiming to be auditors for the Internal Revenue Service, police said.
The woman told police she received a call Wednesday from someone claiming she owed the IRS $500 in back taxes, adding that the call did not arouse any suspicion because she believed she actually did owe the money.
Following instructions, the victim purchased a prepaid debit card to pay off the debt over the telephone. However, the woman told police she continued to receive calls, with the amount owed climbing to $2,000, and was threatened with ”legal charges” if she failed to comply. At that point, the victim contacted authorities, said police, who are conducting an investigation.
