BENNING, Richard B.
BENNING - Richard B. Beloved husband of the late Helen (nee Bailey); devoted father of Betsey Dewey (Bill) of Rochester, NY and Mary Hopple (Bill) of Cincinnati, OH; grandfather of Will and Bob Dewey of Newport, RI, and Bailey Edelson (Alex) of Washington, DC, Jess and Casey Hopple of Cincinnati, OH. Passed away peacefully at Hyde Park Health Center in Cincinnati on Thursday, December 3, 2015, at the age of 92, after a short illness. Born in Orchard Park, NY, he served in the 496th Antiaircraft Artillery Gun Battalion of the US Army in the South Pacific during WWII. He returned from the war and worked for his uncle, Joe Bauer, who owned Bauer's Service Station, one of the first in Western NY. Dick later managed and then owned Bauer's. He served the Town of Orchard Park for many ways. He became a volunteer fireman in the Orchard Park Fire Co. in 1941, rising to the level of 1st District Fire Chief and Fire Commissioner during his 31 years of service. He was made a life member. He was also a Village Trustee. He was proud to be a 32nd degree mason, member of the Masonic Lodge #514 of Orchard Park and Ismailia Shrine of Buffalo. In retirement in Cincinnati, he delivered Meals on Wheels for many years and used his mechanical skills to do woodworking and lamp repair for friends and family. He was known for handing out candy canes to all who "had been nice" during the Christmas season. Services will be held in Orchard Park over Memorial Day weekend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Orchard Park Fire Co., 30 School Street, Orchard Park, NY 14127.
