John F. Decker, retired longshoreman also served in Korean War

John F. Decker, a retired longshoreman, died Friday in his Kenmore home after a lengthy illness. He was 86.

Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of McKinley High School, where he was a running back on the football team. He enrolled at Canisius College on a football scholarship, but left during his freshman year to support his family after the death of his father. He joined the Army in 1952 and served in Alaska during the Korean War. A union longshoreman with Teamsters Local 210, he retired in the 1990s.

His wife of 58 years, the former Suzanne Myer, died in 2011. Survivors include two daughters, Michele Barnes and Deborah Valente; a sister, Jackie Haugh; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial brunch for family and friends will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday in the Hilton Garden Inn, 4201 Genesee St., Cheektowaga.
