Daniel S. ‘Cheezie’ Cizdziel, owned Lackawanna tavern

Sept. 11, 1938 – Nov. 29, 2015

Daniel S. “Cheezie” Cizdziel, of Orchard Park, a Lackawanna tavern owner, died Monday in Mercy Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 77.

Born in Lackawanna, he was a graduate of Lackawanna High School and worked as an electrician at Bethlehem Steel until the plant closed in the early 1980s.

“Nobody could pronounce his last name,” says his daughter, Sandra Yeager, “which is why they called him Cheezie.”

Owner of the Little Vegas Tavern on Kane Street, near the steel plant’s 3 Gate, for the past 36 years, he also was a member of the Lackawanna Auxiliary Police. The tavern closed in October.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and dancing with his customers.

Survivors include his wife, the former Rosemary Podkulski; a son, Kenneth; two daughters; Kim and Sandra Yeager; a sister, Arlene Kingston; and three grandchildren.

There will be no services.
