WHEATFIELD – Fire damaged a piece of equipment called a skid steer at the Niagara County Waste Water Treatment Plant just after 1 p.m. Sunday on Williams Road.
A check of security film on Monday by the Niagara County Sheriff’s Department and Senior Plant Operator Rick Colemen determined that no one had approached the machine or tampered with it. During a light rain on Sunday, the video showed signs of smoke followed by flames erupting from the operator’s compartment.
Members of the Frontier Volunteer Fire Department were called to put out the fire after workers at the plant noticed the flames and tried to put them out.
The machine is owned by Visone Co. Site Development, and a project manager told deputies that the steer had recently been repaired for unspecified electrical issues. The cost of the damage was not immediately known, according to the sheriff report.
