Sklar Brothers podcast finds the funny in Buffalo

For anybody who’s ever wondered, “Where do comedians come up with their jokes?”, there’s a comedy podcast designed especially for you, and it’s about Buffalo.

The Sklar Brothers, Randy and Jason, performed five shows at Helium Comedy Club over the summer, and during their weekend here, they traveled throughout Western New York to learn about the area and develop new, localized jokes into their shows in Buffalo. They also documented their audio journey in a new podcast, “Finding the Funny,” available exclusively on the Howl network.

The 37-minute podcast features the brothers visiting many of our attractions, including Niagara Falls, Anchor Bar and Forrest Lawn, where they visited the grave of Rick James. (“It is very hard to determine what was purposely left here and what blew in off the street,” one of the brothers says of the trinkets left by his grave). They also interviewed local people about their favorite things in Buffalo, and many times it inevitably comes down to arguments about who has the best wings.

Throughout the podcast, you can hear the Sklar Brothers riffing on our local customs with people, and see how those riffs turn into on-stage jokes. By the end of their weekend in Buffalo, the comedy team has built about 10 minutes of new material about Buffalo, most of which can be heard at the end of “Finding the Funny.” In fact, one of the twins notes that their local jokes almost went over better than their regular, time-tested material.

“The crowds here are going with everything,” they said. “This was a blast of a weekend. I almost can’t wait to come back.”

“Finding the Funny” contains strong language and is available through a Howl Premium subscription, but there is a free one-week trial for new members.
