Halloween high jinks for all ages near Ellicottville

Near Ellicottville, these attractions offer a variety of Halloween experiences from cute to scary.

• For the wee ones, we recommend Pumpkinville, about 7 miles away in Great Valley. Parking and admission are free. Activities bracelets are $12.50 Friday through Sunday and $11 from Monday through Friday.

Pumpkinville has cute to corny (even a corn teepee). Parents and grandparents can watch whippersnappers take on the Pumpkin Jumpin’ Pillow and Cow Train. Single activities are $3.75 per person, so older folks can join in for a trip through the corn maze or hayride. Free activities include Storyland, “Perky” the talking pumpkin and farm animals.

Gifts and foods are available too, including baked goods, fudge, caramel apples, and our fave – cider and pumpkin doughnuts. Chicken barbecues available weekends. A giant pumpkin patch makes sure guest find the perfect pumpkin to take home for a jack-o-lantern. Pumpkinville is at 4844 Sugartown Road, Great Valley. Open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Oct. 31. Info: 699-2205, pumpkinville.com or its Facebook page.

• For older kids (and adults who dare), head to Nightmare Hayrides. Open from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday, the attraction brings all the scary elements together, starting with a tractor ride that features heart-stopping ambushes and buzzing chain saws. As the tractor rolls along (not fast enough for some), crazed creatures attack from all sides. Edge riders should beware, but don’t be surprised if a demon hops on the ride, too.

Survivors get to “enjoy” the Gothic Chamber, Haunted Maze, Haunted Barn and a dizzying vortex tunnel. Cost is $18 for all; ages 5 and younger are free, but we suggest double-digit ages.

Located at 6319 Sommerville Valley Road, Nightmare is about 5 miles outside of town. Be sure to say “hi” to the roaming wolfman. (That’s all we’ll say.) Open rain or shine through Nov. 1. No reservations needed. Info: 699-4839, nightmarehayride.com.
