Let’s embrace Skyway as iconic image of city
Our Skyway has gotten a bad rap. Indeed, many have labeled it an eyesore, or even called for its demolition. I am not among them.
Vehicles traveling over the Skyway’s graceful spans have long been treated to the most scenic and dramatic views that our area has to offer of downtown Buffalo, Lake Erie and surrounding communities. The understructure of the Skyway is illuminated at night, providing interesting visual relief integral to our developing Canalside area.
I believe that we as Buffalonians should embrace our Skyway as a symbol and iconic image of the City of Good Neighbors. Pride in the Skyway will increase our region’s sense of self-worth, while promoting Buffalo to the outside world. For example, the city of Corpus Christi, Texas, also has a noteworthy bridge structure leading into the city. Instead of disparaging it or fostering talk of its removal, Corpus Christi has incorporated the bridge into its civic logo, and has used the span in promotional materials.
Let’s take pride in our Skyway and appreciate its architectural grace, its beautiful views and its functionality as one of the major gateways to our special city.
