Common Core, refusal movement to be discussed at education forums

Public forums featuring two well-known public school advocates will be sponsored by Western New Yorkers for Public Education, a group that helped organize the testing boycott.

Carol Burris, a retired Long Island principal who has been one of the state’s most outspoken critics of Common Core, and Diane Ravitch, professor of education at New York University, educational historian and co-founder of the Network for Public Education, will speak at 6:30 p.m. Monday at West Seneca West High School, 3330 Seneca St. They will be at Niagara Falls High School, 4455 Porter Road, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The free events, “Public Education NOW: Reform, Resistance & Solutions in New York State,” will discuss the impact of Common Core and high-stakes testing, the opt-out/refusal movement, education reform and local control issues.
