A 25-year-old man is expected to recover from a gunshot wound to the abdomen that reportedly occurred while he was cleaning a handgun, Cheektowaga police said Wednesday.
Police were dispatched to 208 Steven Drive shortly before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, when a man reported he accidentally shot himself, police said.
Assistant Police Chief James Speyer said the man told police he was cleaning his handgun.
“He was home alone when it happened,” Speyer said. “He said it was an accidental discharge.”
The man was taken to Erie County Medical Center, where he was listed in fair condition Wednesday morning, according to the assistant chief.
Speyer withheld the man’s name, citing the ongoing investigation of the circumstances of the shooting. The legal status of the handgun also is under investigation, Speyer said.
