HOMETOWN HONORS – Rep. Brian Higgins will be the featured speaker in the weekly IMAGINE Buffalo lunchtime lecture series at noon Tuesday in the Ring of Knowledge on the main floor of the Central Library on Lafayette Square in downtown Buffalo.

The sponsors, the Center for the Study of Art, Architecture, History & Nature, also will present Higgins with the group’s 2015 Recognition Award. Admission is free. You can bring a lunch or purchase one at the library’s Fables Cafe.

SCHOOL DAYS – “Past and Present History of Riverside High School” will be the topic as Ruth Hawthorne, the school’s alumni president, speaks in a program that begins at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Black Rock Historical Society museum, 1902 Niagara St. Photos and memorabilia will be on display. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own mementos to share.

BIRDS OF A FEATHER – Cornell Cooperative Extension of Niagara County is offering a series of two classes for people interested in raising their own chickens. The first one, Backyard Chicken Basics, will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the organization’s 4-H Training Center, 4487 Lake Ave., Lockport. The second one, Backyard Chicken Keeping, will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 15. Cost is $10 each or both for $15. INSIDE LOOK – Tickets are still available for Preservation Buffalo Niagara’s exclusive tour of the 500 Seneca Building at 5 p.m. Thursday. The former F.N. Burt Co. box manufacturing plant, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is being turned into a mixed-use facility with offices, a job training center, cultural space and storage and flexible use space for tenants. BOTH SIDES NOW – Re-enactors portraying Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and Gen. Robert E. Lee will be on hand for a Civil War event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on the grounds of the Lancaster One-Room Schoolhouse, Bowen Road and William Street. Sponsored by the Lancaster Historical Society and the Buffalo Civil War Roundtable, the day will feature several re-enactment groups in Union and Confederate uniforms, as well as civilians in 1860s dress.

A display of Civil War-era medical instruments will be featured. Visitors also can tour the schoolhouse, built in 1868 and furnished as it would have been during its early years. Admission is free.

NEEDLE ARTS – More than 160 quilts will be on display as the Southtowns Piecemakers Quilting Guild holds its 14th quilt show, the Southtowns Quilt Expo, this weekend in the Church of the Annunciation school building, 7580 Clinton St., Elma. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Among the features will be an exhibit of antique quilts from the Buffalo History Museum. There also will be basket raffles and a quilt raffle. Proceeds will benefit Western New York Heroes.

GO GETTERS – The Buffalo Niagara Chapter of New York State Women Inc. will celebrate Women in Business Month in October with a showcase of local women entrepreneurs Oct. 7 in the Protocol Restaurant, 6766 Transit Road, Amherst.
